ISDN brings with it the clarity and speed of digital technology. When used for Internet access, ISDN delivers up to five times the speed of the fastest analog technology.

ISDN features two B channels and one D channel for simultaneous data, fax or voice transmissions. A single B channel carries up to 64Kbps of data. With the right ISDN hardware (link to supported hardware) you can combine the two B channels for 128Kbps data transfer.

The primary attraction of ISDN is the data rate it delivers over most existing twisted-pair wire (the same wiring used for telephones) going into a home or business. ISDN also has the added advantage of inherently lower line noise; meaning you'll have a better chance of realizing true ISDN speeds. An analog (14.4 or 28.8) line, which is subject to noise degradation, has less of a chance of reaching its data rate.

Finally, ISDN will establish a call with much greater speed than a standard analog call; or the time it takes to connect to the remote equipment (point-of-presence). Disconnect works in much the same way. You might experience a 10-12 second wait to "disconnect" from your analog service, where ISDN only takes seconds to disconnect.
